Goals:

Go into more teachers classroom's (vertically)

Learner styles earlier in the year to help the students understand how they can help themselves learn best (metacognition)

Plans:

Make time on a bimonthly basis to visit grade 3 and grade 5 for a chance to see how they are teaching to improve on my own teaching and learning practices.

Make sure to do a learning style assessment and mini lesson within the first month at school so students become aware of how they can take ownership over improving their own learn experience.

Goals:

Develop new research based class routines

Active listen and mindfulness

Plans:

Over the summer conduct a literature review of current thinking about classroom routines to see if I can freshen up or change things up a bit. Focus on active listening routines, as this is an area I would really like to improve in my teaching and learning practice.

Make time to do a 2-5 minute mindfulness practice everyday with the students.

Goals:

Wider variety of visible thinking strategies

Differentiation up and down (menu as suggested by David Swanson)

Plans:

I have my favourites, but I know there are a lot of great ones that I have not experimented with yet. I'd like to try and become proficient with at least two new ones each term.

Start small with a few menu options differentiating both for lower and higher level students and build it in to out classroom culture from there.

Goals:

More frequent communication with parents about small student achievements

Contribute to in school PD sessions/Solution provider rather than problematizing

Plans:

Try to send one nice student achievement note at the end of each day, so that parents receive a few random positive comments they can talk about and celebrate with their children over the course of the year. I would like to make this part of my end of the day routine so it becomes a habit.

I am an introvert and it really makes me uncomfortable talking in front of my peers, but I would like to push myself to lead one in school PD session. I lead one on Comic Life this year that I wasn't happy with, so I will use this as motivation to try and find ways I can help my colleagues effectively through areas that I consider strengths.

Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.
